Located in the most southerly part of Scotland, Balloch Wood is a maritime wood situated on the coast of the Solway Firth. 


The solid rock geology of the area is composed of sedimentary greywackes and shales modified by glacial deposition and erosion. 


Balloch Wood is categorised as a Narrow wooded river valley in the Dumfries and Galloway Landscape Assessment.
